Laura and Gabe | A Unique San Francisco Wedding - Alamo Square Park, Absinthe, Cafe du Nord

Heck. Yes.

Dear couples, a wedding can be whatever you want it to be. As long as the two of you get married, all the other details are just the icing on top of the cake.

When Laura first approached me about photographing her wedding, she described it as nontraditional, with no/few flowers, no aisle, and a dark blue sweetheart lace fit & flare dress. “I feel like this is coming across as negative,” she said, “but we are just focusing on the things that are most important to us :)”

Hear hear! Laura and Gabe got married with their closest group of friends and family surrounding them at Alamo Square Park with the cityscape behind them, had an intimate dinner at Absinthe, then joined the larger group for donuts and dancing at Cafe du Nord.

Ceremony: Alamo Square Park, San Francisco

  1. What was the most memorable part of the day?
Though our ceremony was short, that time in the park was the most memorable part of the day for me. It felt incredibly vulnerable, sharing what we normally just say to one another, in front of our friends and family. Looking around to everyone, I could feel the love and joy surround us. It was so powerful, and I felt so present in the moment.

  2. What unique detail was the most important for you to include and why?
This is the hardest question to answer! The unique detail that I love the most is the custom poster by Matthew J. Fleming, that I commissioned as a wedding gift. The design includes so many details about our relationship and the day, from our favorite records, to the ceremony and reception venues. Music is so important to us, and we have posters from dozens of shows we've seen ourselves and together. Using the back of it as our guest book means that everyone who was there is a part of our commitment to one another. It's hanging in a prime location in our new home.

  3. What came most as a surprise to you about the day?
How time flew by! I would have loved to have hours more with friends and loved ones, and more time to connect one on one with everyone there.

Mary & Aaron | Pelican Inn Wedding at Muir Beach, CA

Mary and Aaron got married at the loveliest little inn!

Small spaces and very low-light venues can be tricky to photograph, but I usually like the challenge. I thrive in it, actually. I find some of my best compositions come from smaller spaces, and I have always loved the ambiance of pure candlelight.

Christina & Damian | Intimate Boat Shack Wedding at Nick's Cove in Marshall, CA

12 guests.
A windy walk down the entire length of the pier.
A quaint boat shack housing a single table and chairs.

A dinner at sunset.
Toasts in the glowing evening light.
A first dance in the chilly darkness.

The gentle hum of the waves.
The quiet lights glowing softly.

Lexi & Joe | An Intimate Backyard Wedding in Piedmont

"Do I look stupid? No? Awesome!" -Lexi, upon her friends seeing her in her wedding dress for the first time, and also upon me arriving and seeing her putting on her makeup.

Lexi and Joe had a beautifully intimate wedding at her parents' house in Piedmont. What a wedding. All about family, friends, and the things Lexi and Joe cared most about - the food and drink!

Almost all of the decor was made by hand, and even their rings were made by a friend at the wedding. Lexi and her students made the cool paper diamonds that decorated the tables and the space, and which also made up the backdrop of their photobooth.

The food and drink were catered by people who were also passionate about what they do, and you could really feel the care and artistry they put into it all (which is why there's such a good amount of food photos in this blog post!).

A gorgeous little space made even more special by the people, the relationships, and the moments. Congratulations, Lexi and Joe!

Sherin & Pankaj | A Small Bohemian Wedding at the Sunnyside Conservatory

I'm thrilled to share Sherin & Pankaj's small wedding at the Sunnyside Conservatory!

What I loved most about documenting their day was how much it was about connecting with their friends and family.

Sherin & Pankaj's apartment was just the right place to get ready together, between having Sherin's long-time best friend do her makeup, choosing which shoes to wear together, and just having the entire getting ready experience feel so comfortably day-to-day.

Their set up at the Sunnyside Conservatory's intimate space encouraged mingling and connection. Everything just felt so casual, laid back, and honest - some of the best feelings to have on a day that's usually associated with being hectic and fast!

The cutest honest moment was when I caught the grin from Sherin immediately after someone handed her her bouquet and whispered "You forgot your bouquet for the ceremony!" at the last moment that she and Pankaj were walking down the aisle as a married couple.

Towards the end, we just took a short walk around the property for about 15 minutes and made a few portraits. Then they were right back to joining their closest friends.

Beth & Wally | San Ysidro Ranch Wedding

I always love a good, intimate sized wedding.

Beth and Wally celebrated their marriage down by the wine cellar at the gorgeous San Ysidro Ranch in Santa Barbara, CA along with 36 of their close friends and family. Throughout the day and night, there were so many small moments that might've gone unnoticed, like the small glances they gave each other, laughs between friends, and quiet embraces between lovers. I feel so lucky to have experienced this amount of love and intimacy on this day.

Many thanks to Katie Schuette of KB Events for planning and coordinating a smooth and beautiful day, Kaleidoscope Flowers for the florals, and the very talented Catalina Esteves for the live music.
